Here is an updated list of my 10 best holiday movies of all time. From Thanksgiving through New Year’s, enjoy these great holiday movies with your family or significant other. These films represent a compilation of my favorite holiday films over the years, simply the best in my opinion. They are sure to deliver the merriest of holiday spirits and the warmest memories you can relive over and over again. So cuddle up with the family and the dog and cat and watch one or more of these flicks over the holidays.
1. It’s a Wonderful Life (1979)
George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all – and it’s Christmas! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn’t been for all of his good deeds over the years.

2. Home Alone (1990) DRAFT
Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) has become the man of the house, overnight! Accidentally left behind when his family rushes off on a Christmas vacation, Kevin gets busy decorating the house for the holidays. But he’s not decking the halls with tinsel and holly. Two bumbling burglars are trying to break in, and Kevin’s rigging a bewildering battery of booby traps to welcome them.

3. Miracle on 34th Street (1947) DRAFT
At the Macy’s Department Store Thanksgiving Day parade, the actor playing Santa gets drunk.Doris Walker, the events director, persuades another old man to take his place. The old man proves to be a sensation and is quickly recruited to be the store Santa at the main Macy’s outlet. While he is successful, Ms. Walker learns that he calls himself Kris Kringle and he claims to be the actual Santa Claus.

4. While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Lucy’s life consists of constant loneliness that is until she saves Peter’s life. Now she is a part of his family, and with a strong heart and fate on her side, others begin to realize what a terrific person she is, especially Jack, Peter’s brother. An extraordinarily true-to-life sequence of events begin to take place as Lucy and Jack become closer.

5. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, is bored with doing the same thing every year for Halloween. One day he stumbles into Christmas Town, and is so taken with the idea of Christmas that he tries to get the resident bats, ghouls, and goblins of Halloween town to help him put on Christmas instead of Halloween.

6. A Christmas Story (1983)
Ralphie, a young boy growing up in the ’40’s, dreams of owning a Red Rider BB gun. He sets out to convince the world this is the perfect gift. But along the way, he runs into opposition from his parents, his teacher, and even good ‘ol Santa Claus himself.
Memorable quote from the film, “I have since heard of people under extreme duress speaking in strange tongues. I became conscious that a steady torrent of obscenities and swearing of all kinds was pouring out of me as I screamed.”
7. The Santa Clause (1994) DRAFT
Divorced toy company executive Scott Calvin is pleased to have his son Charlie for Christmas. But when Santa Claus accidentally topples off the roof of the house and falls with a thud in the snow, Scott finds himself taking the merry old elf’s place and earning new respect in his son’s eyes.

8. A Christmas Carol (1951)
This is the desert-island choice of the many versions of A Christmas Carol, with a magnificent, full-bodied portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge by Alastair Sim that leaves everyone else in the dust. Lean and direct, this film’s version of the story wastes no time trying to impress viewers with the magical nature of the spirits’ visitations.
Memorable quote from the film, “Did you not cut yourself off from you fellow man when you lost the love of that delicate creature?”
9. Elf (2004) DRAFT
Buddy was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa’s sack and ended up at the North Pole. Later, as an adult human who happened to be raised by elves, Santa allows him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs. Hobbs, on Santa’s naughty list for being a heartless jerk, had no idea that Buddy was even born.
Memorable quote from the film, “This place reminds me of Santa’s Workshop! Except it smells like mushrooms and everyone looks like they want to hurt me.”
10. Groundhog Day
A weather man is reluctantly sent to cover a story about a weather forecasting and a groundhog). This is his fourth year on the story, and he makes no effort to hide his frustration. On awaking the ‘following’ day he discovers that it’s Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. First he uses this to his advantage, then comes the realisation that he is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people do the same thing every day.
