  Now Showing: True Grit

In the kick-off show for the 25th season of American Masters, the first show is "Jeff Bridges: The Dude Abides." calls. The 82-minute program, which aired on PBS, traces Bridges’ career from his first on-screen role on his father Lloyd Bridge’s 1960s television show "Sea Hunt" to his 2011 Coen Brother’s remake of "True Grit." In one of many poignant discussion during the the documentary, a Bridges colleague, Loyd Catlett. calls Bridge's "True Grit" character Rooster Cogburn the Dude’s great-great-great grandfather. This comment references the character The Dude, Bridge's iconic stoner persona from the another Coen Brother's film film "The Big Lebowski."

In True Grit is, Bridges plays Rueben "Rooster" Cogburn, the role that won John Wayne an Oscar in the 1969 film. The primary focus of the film is his relationship with a 14 year old girl. She tags along with Cogburn, an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman to track the outlaw who killed her father. The trail leads them into hostile Indian territory. The original told the story from Cogburn’s vantage point, but the new version will work from the viewpoint of the young girl.

The deep, penetrating relationships in this film make it perfect fodder for cinema therpay. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did (Photo Credit: Harmony Gerber / Shutterstock.com).
